Research interests/expertise

Giuliana’s research examines the role of the media in social change processes, focusing on news media, digital media, normative models of journalism, and strategic communication for social change and just peacebuilding. This work contributes to the analysis and reform of media’s role in shaping discourses and practices during periods of transformation and instability.

This work sits at the intersection of research, teaching, and community engagement, with a strong emphasis on communities empowerment through knowledge and communication practices.

Areas of teaching

Giuliana uses a mixed practice-and-research approach in her teaching, integrating the latest scholarship and ideas with grounded, hands-on practice, whether through grassroots and activist work or community-embedded professional news production.

Journalism & Social Change – creator of the Journalism for Change and Beyond News journalism module, training students in constructive and decolonising practices aligned with international human rights and critical peace journalism approaches.

Media & Society / Sociology of Media – exploring how media shape identities, communities, and processes of transformation.

Research & Digital Methods – equipping students with critical and creative tools to analyse communication in digital and crisis contexts.

Normative Models of Journalism & Strategic Communication – examining ideals of journalism, reform, and communication strategies for social change.

Digital Media & Interdisciplinary Practice – connecting journalism with psychology, biomedical science, and community partners to create impact-oriented learning.

This teaching is driven by a strong commitment to dialogic, participatory spaces that empower practitioners, activists, and communities to co-produce knowledge, challenge dominant narratives, and regain a leading role as agents of transformation for a better world.

Projects

Areas of Current Work

Media, Crisis, and Global North/South Collaborations
Building a research project that bridges academic and practitioner perspectives on journalism in crisis contexts. The project draws on her prior collaborations with the Council of Europe. Submission expected in 2025.

Media Discourses and Conflicts
Advancing critical research on media framings of conflict through publications and collaborative projects. Giuliana is co-editing an international collection on media discourses and Israel/Gaza. She has co-authored an article on peace discourses on Twitter and is preparing another edited collection with the European network formed at her EUI workshop on press coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (2025).

Dialogue, Media, and Peacebuilding
Combining academic research with policy engagement and grassroots dialogue. Giuliana has submitted evidence to the UK Government’s Foreign Affairs Committee and serves on the UK Education Committee for Friends of Standing Together, an international initiative supporting Israeli and Palestinian dialogue. She organised Safeguarding Dialogue and Cultures in Times of Crisis at the European Sociology Conference (Nottingham, 2025), international panel bringing together peace organisations and academics.

Palestinian Heritage and Digital Infrastructures in Crisis
Linking cultural heritage with communication infrastructures under crisis. Giuliana supervised the Cultural Heritage in the Occupied Territories as a Means to Peace initiative (British Council), working with tourism managers and cultural organisations (2023–2025), and carried out by Nadine Aranki. She is co-authoring an article on media infrastructures after October 7 with Nadine Aranki, and Rami Isaac (Bethlehem and Breda University).

Peace Journalism and Constructive Media Practices
Deepening and globalising the field of peace journalism through teaching, networks, and practice-based collaborations. Giuliana has worked with Prof. Jake Lynch (University of Sydney), Steve Youngblood (Center for Global Peace Journalism), and Global South practitioners who contribute as guest speakers to her modules. These collaborations reinforce a long-standing commitment to advancing just peace through media and communication research and engagement.
